Kansas in the Fall Photos

After too many no-color-change Falls in LA got to spend a couple days back in Kansas just as Fall set-in.

Note: We're cleaning up the Photo Galleries; please excuse the messy layout it'll be better soon. - Mgmt.

  • At the Louisburg Apple Butter or Pumpkin Something Days -- really just a chance to buy marshmellow guns (yeah, that was the hot item) and pumpkin donuts.

  • OK, my nieces at Louisburg Apple-Fest-thing. This was before they learned that the kitchen was no longer making pumpkin-pancakes, which was the point of the excursion

  • Judy at the hopper that takes apples into the barn for cidering.

  • Just some flower in Judy's backyard
  • Apparently this barn spider, about two inches across, is enough to keep the girls from walking to the end of the driveway to fetch the paper. Yeah, that brave

  • I gotta say, I love this photo. It's the only framed picture I have. Sitting on my desk right now, in front of me. It's just what isn't said, what could be mis-read that pleases me so. Some math equation perhaps: "I'm cute" + "America!" + dog collar + "I'm wearing black, always" + "but I carrya a pink purse". This gives me hope.

  • Judy rightly pointed out that this tree bears an uncanny resemblance to the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz

  • Shawnee Mission Park has this dinky observation tower about, hmmm, I suppose 60 feet or so in height, but just ricketty enough to make the climb fun. From the top you are able to confirm (a) Kansas is flat, (b) there isn't much in Kansas, (c) there isn't enough to do in Kansas that spitting off a tower cannot become the day's high point.

  • Shawnee Mission Park's Lake
  • Smells trigger memory the fastes, and standing on the docks at Shawnee Mission Park reminded me of the fireworks displays, someone's wedding, and the paddle boats.

  • As a kid who didn't think Indian Corn was the coolest?

  • They've built a quite nice market there in the old downtown Overland Park area. Not too far from John's Space Age Donuts. Mmmmmmm. I don't remember the name of the coffee house there either, but it was wifi'ed and that was nic.

  • This is about the older man in the background watch'n me take pics. He's suspicious. Most damned-fool thing he's every seen anyone do.

  • Judy should be annoyed that I'd take a pic from curb level, looking up her nostrils.

  • This converted house in Lenexa is walking distance from the sis. A coffee house, pizza joint, and german restaurant under large trees with outdoor seating -- soooo cool. Here in LA we have Mud Puppy, but gotta say, Coffee Bay, being buried in the middle of a residential area, wins out (the extremely impressive ones scattered about Minneapolis withstanding)

  • I think this was in Blue Springs or wait... Lee's Summit, MO, outside the Filling Station, a quaint little BBQ joint.

  • Union Station
  • Kansas City's (KC's) old Union Station has been restored, though there isn't much to do there. Unless you want grilled carrot cake.

  • This was kind of cool. The water is actuall beinf fired up from below. And you are able to walk inside the fountain -- a sensor turns off the water just in time. Once inside, the water is turned on again. OK. I didn't say it was exciting or anything, just cool. Shut up.
