Dracula Sketches - the Drawing Club

Laid-back escape in a not-so-out-of-the-way location

After more than a year of "planning to" I finally made it to the drawing club this past week where the theme was, appropriately, Dracula. I was blown away. It truly exceeded my expectations, which were fairly high -- and if you've ever seen the past work posted on their blog you know why.

The evening's star, daper model John Tucker -- straight from central casting -- moved unhesitantly between varied, dynamic poses (5, 10, and 15 minutes) that would've pleased Hogarth. A cross between Rex Harrision and Lon Chaney Jr., he was splendidly attired, complete from his red silk-lined cape down to pinky ring, spats, and stage makeup. Perhaps the greatest challenge was choosing whether to spend the few minutes available on his face, hands, or the entire tableau -- the man surely knows how to work a cape! I'd like to replay the evening just to spend it drawing fabric folds.

Oh, and playing beside him on a large screen -- the Universal 'n Bela Lugosi horror classic "Dracula".

No fan of squishy terms like "good energy" let's say it was a congenial crowd; even a complete hack like myself felt comfortable alongside some really talented folks.

Huge thanks! At some middle moment the room's mood overtook that all-too-long-work-week cloud and it felt just great -- name a better way to end the week, cuz I can't.
